The Bill for this Act of the Scottish Parliament was passed by the Parliament on 20th December 2017 and received Royal Assent on 24th January 2018. The bill prohibits the use of any wild animal in a traveling circus in Scotland on ethical grounds, reflecting respect for the animals and their natural behaviors.
Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham said the move would send a message to the world that Scotland does not condone the misuse of wild animals. She goes on to say, “This is an important act that will not only prevent traveling circuses ever showing wild animals in Scotland in the future, but will demonstrate to the wider world that we are one of the growing number of countries that no longer condones the use of wild animals in this way.”
The Republic of Ireland, shortly after Scotland, passed a similar bill prohibiting wild animals in circuses.Scottish Legislation marks the first ban for this and joins the 36 other countries with similar restrictions in place.
